Biketowork

This coming week you will see more cyclists on the road for B.C.’s Bike to Work Week. This event will be taking place across British Columbia from May 27 to June 2 and celebrates commuter cycling as an active alternative to driving to work or taking transit.

For Vancouver’s Bike to Work Week, offices across the city will be competing to log kilometres travelled and number of employees cycling to work. Celebration Stations will be located along major bike routes in the city. They will be promoting cycling education, increasing awareness and giving away prizes. Visit Vancouver’s Bike to Work Week web site for more information about the event or to learn about how your office can participate.

Though the event is on now, the temperate climate in the Lower Mainland makes cycling a convenient option year-round. The City of Vancouver is criss-crossed with bike lanes and every part of the region can be accessed along bicycle friendly routes. Cyclists who are new to the area may want to read through The City of Vancouver’s cycling laws and bylaws which outline the rules of the road for cyclists. Continue reading

Bowen Island by Savage blackout

Bowen Island is only a short ferry ride form Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal and easily accessible from Vancouver by car or by transit. With mountain views, fresh local food, outdoor activities, and endless shorelines to explore; Bowen Island is a great adventure!

Even the 20-minute ferry ride over to Bowen Island is worth the trip. You can see the North Shore Mountains steeply meeting the shoreline of Howe Sound and gaze out to the Georgia Straight, Vancouver Island and other Gulf Islands.

The tiny town of Snug Cove is picture perfect. There are shops and cafes and a small park near the marina that is a perfect spot for a picnic. Beside the Ferry Terminal there are Kayaks that rent by the hour and are a great way to explore the beaches, coves and wild life around the Island. Kayaking is known as Bowen Island’s “Signature Activity.”  Hiking on Bowen Island is a popular pastime. You may want to hike the wetlands of Killarney Lake or up Mt. Gardener for a panoramic views. Catching the sunset on one of the rocky beaches on the west side of Bowen Island is the perfect way to end your day trip before heading back to Vancouver. Continue reading
