7 Tips for Staying Healthy While Travelling

Let’s face it: maintaining healthy habits at home is difficult enough. So, when a new city and even busier schedule are added to the mix, how are you expected to stay on track of your health goals? Well, our team here at Vancouver Extended Stay will tell you that with a little hard work and encouragement, it’s possible! Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, here are some of our simple, yet effective tips for staying healthy while you’re on the road.

1. Get Enough Sleep

There’s a reason why we started with this one, and it’s because sleep is incredibly important for your overall physical and mental well-being. Commonly underestimated, a good night’s sleep of 7-9 hours is something many busy travellers sacrifice when they’re out of town. Remember that you’ll get a lot more done and feel better doing it if you’re well-rested.

2. Make Your Own Meals

Eating out every day can get old, fast. One way to stay on top of your health goals is to make your own nutritious (and delicious!) meals during your trip. Here at Vancouver Extended Stay, each of our apartments include a fully-equipped kitchen, so all you have to worry about supplying are the groceries and your favourite healthy recipes from home!

3. Stay Hydrated

Oftentimes, the symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger, and what do we do when we’re hungry? We eat! In order to prevent unnecessary snacking and overeating, it’s important to make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. We recommend carrying a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go!

4. Walk Everywhere

Calling a cab? Think again! If it’s within walking distance, why not burn calories rather than dollars? Walking is a great way to get in some additional exercise while breathing in the fresh, outdoor air and taking in the beautiful sights of wherever you may be. 5. Establish a Workout Routine

Staying active while travelling can be especially challenging, but it’s important to make it a priority. If you can get in the habit of exercising on a regular basis, it can help you to stay motivated while you’re away. Staying with us? Make sure to take advantage of our fitness facilities – they’re open 24/7!

6. Have Fun While Staying Active

No gym? No problem. There are a ton of activities you can do that are both a great workout and a good time. If you’re staying in Vancouver, hiking, cycling the Seawall, or taking a swim at the beach are excellent ways of taking in the city’s natural beauty and getting the heart rate going! 

7. Schedule In Some Downtime

As important as diet and exercise are, taking the time to relax and unwind after a busy day is also necessary for maintaining balance. Oftentimes when travelling, we jam-pack the days with activities, but it’s important to avoid burnout through overexertion of energy. So, remember that it’s okay to spend an evening catching up on your favourite Netflix show, or reading a page from that book you brought with you but still haven’t started.
